Angioplasty – after Bypass operation

Coronary artery disease is a common cause of death all over the world and its incidence is continuing to rise in India due to the increased incidence of diabetes, sedentary lifestyle and poor diet. Bypass operation has been the mainstay of treatment for patients with severe coronary artery disease affecting all three major blood vessels of the heart. Despite good long term results from bypass operation a large volume of patients who have bypass operation at a younger age re-present themselves few years after bypass operation with further blockages or sometimes even with blockages of the bypass grafts, especially the vein grafts. The treatment for these patients is often limited due to the severity of the disease and the lack of expertise in performing angioplasty on these patients with very severe coronary artery disease. With the recent development in Interventional Cardiology, angioplasty and stenting can now be done for such patients with very good results as a second bypass operation often is associated with high risk.

Apollo Heart Institute, Ayanambakkam (AHIA) is well equipped with a state of the art Cath Lab and all diagnostic cardiac imaging modalities. AHIA is staffed with higly skilled and internationally accredited Interventional Cardiologists who perform complex coronary intervention including Left Main stenting, bifurcation stenting, chronic total occlusions and angioplasty for patients not suitable for bypass surgery. AHIA also offers pacemaker implantation including biventricular pacemaker and implantable defibrillator (ICD) implantation for patients with severe heart failure.
